Jennifer Grimm is a nationally acclaimed vocalist and songwriter with credits including performing at New York’s Carnegie Hall, scoring hits internationally and having her music featured on networks such as NBC, USA, and SHOWTIME.

Joe Cruz has developed a vast array of styles over his 40 year career. He plays anything from solo acoustic guitar to swinging with a jazz combo and picking mandolin in a bluegrass band or exploring his Latin roots on Cuban trés and Puerto Rican cuatro.

Together, the group will perform original work, favorites off their respective records, and familiar tunes, with a few surprises along the way.

James is a multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, producer, and a three-time Minnesota Hall of Fame inductee as a member of Willie & The Bees, Shangoya and Ipso Facto. His music has been featured in various movies and Television shows. He was voted Best Brass/Reed Artist at the Minnesota Music Awards in 1994.

Live Music at Umbra: Jon Pemberton

Over the years, Jon has been featured as sideman on many recordings, including George Avaloz “The Highest Mountain,” John Devine “A Little ‘o That,” Mike Olson “Incidental,” SkaTet “Skarmegeddon” and “American Ska-thic,” Recessive Traits “Sex Cells,” Paul Renz “Everlasting,” Natalie Lovejoy “Wish I Could Fall,” and John David “Letters from America.”

Jon released his debut piano CD in 2010. Entitled “On the Edge,” it’s a swingin’ piano trio featuring eight original compositions, two Bobby Peterson tunes and a Thelonious Monk classic. Jon receives excellent support from first-call Twin Cities sidemen, Gary Raynor (bass) and Jay Epstein (drums).

Jon released his debut trumpet CD in 2016, “Now Hear This!”, a swingin’ quartet date, recorded live at the Artist’s Quarter in 2008. The band, in fine form throughout, features tenor saxophonist Jim Marentic, bassist Tom Lewis, and drummer Kenny Horst. The hard bop/free bop session includes two Pemberton originals, two seldom heard standards, and tunes by Ornette, Monk and Mingus.

Throughout her 23 years of performing she’s been a studio session singer for Andy Kotz productions and also the well-known Pachyderm studios.  She’s worked with several local bands here in the cities as well, which currently includes her own band KGB (Kendra Glenn Band). She’s worked with Nicholas David Mrozinski and the feeling band (3rd winner up on the Voice) R-Factor formerly Rupert’s Orchestra, Brian Kinney Band and countless others.

Kathleen Johnson has worked with many local and international greats such as PRINCE, Kirk Johnson, Billy Holloman, Jamecia Bennett, Jellybean Johnson, Thomasina Petrus, Paul, Patty, and Jason Peterson, Susann Carwell, Gwen Matthews, Debbie Duncan, Billy McLaughlin, Bruce Henry, Keri Noble, Robert Robinson, Ginger Commodore, Lori Line, and Alexander O’Neal. She has fronted many special events projects and corporate bands including her own “UniverSoul” Project. Kathleen has recently released her own “kAt Band” project that features original music and many of the best local musicians and vocalists in the Twin Cities.

Jason Weismann’s smooth, smoky vocals are complemented by his breathy tenor sax work and backed by some of the swinging-est sidemen on the Twin Cities jazz scene. The Q performs a mix of well-loved standards, overlooked chestnuts and even a few well-crafted originals — featuring musicianship that will both engage the casual listener and impress the jazz aficionado.
